Beginner’s Guide to Genshin Impact Elements and Reactions

When playing Genshin Impact, we get introduced to elements through a few early game characters like the Traveler, Amber, Lisa, and others. Most beginners understand the basic idea of strengths and weaknesses of an element; for example, pyro being weak against hydro but strong against cryo, etc. But this isn’t everything about the elements in this game; hence, I bring you this beginner’s guide to teach you everything about Genshin Impact Elements and, more importantly, the element reactions.

Beginner’s Guide to Elemental Reactions in Genshin Impact

Every element in Genshin Impact has an affinity that grants characters unique elemental powers. When two or more of these elements combine, it creates an elemental reaction. Keep in mind that not all elemental combinations have a reaction; check out this detailed table below to understand the elemental reactions with ease!

Elements 1.Anemo 1.Cryo 1.Dendro 1.Electro 1.Geo 1.Hydro 1.Pyro
2.Anemo none swirl none swirl none swirl swirl
2.Cryo swirl none none s.conduct none frozen melt
2.Dendro none none none quicken none bloom burning
2.Electro swirl s.conduct quicken none none e.charge overload
2.Geo none crystalize none crystalize none crystalize crystalize
2.Hydro swirl frozen bloom e.charge none none vaporize
2.Pyro swirl melt burning overload none vaporize none

Note: s.conduct refers to Super-Conduct and e.charge refers to Electro-Charged.

At the top of the table is the first element, labeled 1. Anemo, and so forth. The left side contains the second element, labeled as 2. Anemo, etc.

Depending on the first and second elements, the magnitude of the elemental reaction changes. For example, if the first element is Hydro and the second element is Pyro, you get 1.5x Vaporize. But if the first element is Pyro and the second element is Hydro, you get 2x Vaporize.

In most cases, a combination of the first and second Genshin elements gives the same elemental reaction, but Geo has a special case here. If the first element is Geo, it never ends with an elemental reaction. But if Geo is the second element, the “Crystallize elemental reaction can be seen when combined with Pyro, Hydro, Electro, or Cryo.

Anemo, on the other hand, always triggers the Swirl elemental reaction when combined with Pyro, Hydro, Electro, or Cryo—but does not react with Dendro and Geo.

Note: Any element, when combined with its own type, will not give any elemental reaction.

There are also special elemental reactions that require a combination of three Genshin elements; they are:

  1. Shatter: Use Hydro + Cryo to Freeze the enemy. Then, hit the frozen enemy with a blunt or Geo attack to trigger the Shatter reaction.
  2. Burgeon: Combine Hydro + Dendro to create Bloom, which generates a Dendro Core. Hit the core with a Pyro attack to activate the Burgeon reaction.
  3. Spread: Use Dendro + Electro to trigger Quicken, and then apply Dendro over Quicken to create the Spread effect.
  4. Aggravate: Use Dendro + Electro to trigger Quicken, and then apply Electro over Quicken to activate Aggravate.
  5. Hyper-bloom: Combine Hydro + Dendro to create Bloom, and then apply Electro over the Dendro Core to trigger the Hyper-bloom effect.

This brings us to the end of our beginner’s guide to Genshin Impact elements and reactions. Make sure to refer to the table for future reference.
