How RAL 7001 reads
Despite the name, silver grey is not metallic. It is a light to mid cool grey with a blue tint, lighter than RAL 7000 squirrel grey and close to RAL 7040 window grey.
Where it turns up
It suits machinery, cladding, window frames and garden furniture. Buyers often expect a metallic finish from the name, so order a sample; for a real metallic look, RAL 9006 white aluminium is the usual alternative.
Ordering RAL 7001 in paint or powder
Quote the number, not just the name: say "RAL Classic 7001" and add the gloss level, the product type (wall paint, metal paint, powder, aerosol) and the surface. The same number mixed by two makers, or in two gloss levels, can look slightly different, so keep a whole job in one batch and look at a sample in daylight first. The paint counter guide covers the questions to ask.
